Interdisciplinary Studies - Educator Preparation Program

The Educator Preparation Program (EPP) prepares students to become highly qualified classroom teachers serving diverse educational communities. Students have the opportunity to become involved in two teacher education organizations on campus: the campus chapter of the Association of Childhood Education International (ACEI) and the Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society for those students who qualify. Throughout the academic year, teacher candidates are able to meet and learn from superintendents, principals, and renowned public and private school teachers. To earn the associate’s or bachelor’s degree, students must complete the required hours in the general education core, the institutional course requirements, and the content (major program) area requirements.

The Governor of Texas declaration of disaster on March 13, 2020, in accordance with Texas Government Code, §418.014, all EPPs shall be assigned a status of Not Rated: Declared State of Disaster for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years.

As described in §229.4(b)(4)(C), the ASEP status assigned to each EPP for the 2018-2019 academic year is the operative accreditation status for purposes prescribed in 19 TAC Chapter 228, related to Requirements for Educator Preparation Programs. The approved status of the Texas College EPP in 2018-2019 was Accredited.

The Division of Education offers the major Interdisciplinary Studies - Educator Preparation Program leading to teacher certification in the following areas: Core Subjects EC-6 with STR; English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 with STR; Math and Science grades 4-8; English Language Arts and Reading, Math and Science grades 7-12; and Physical Education grades EC-12.

The goals of the Texas College Educator Preparation Program are to:

To prepare highly competent, successful, compassionate and enthusiastic teaching professionals;
To deliver programs with sound pedagogical and professional courses, and clinical practice;
To utilize a variety of learner-centered instructional strategies that address student diversity;
To train students to integrate instructional technology across the curriculum;
To foster collaborations with external partners (e.g. school districts, public/private schools, regional service centers) for expanding students’ networking and career opportunities;
To broaden student knowledge of and experience in best practices; and
To provide authentic, real-world experiences and assessments.
